We had a cartridge error. We refilled and replaced the cartridges but still have a cartridge error. We have restarted and unplugged and replugged the printer a couple of times and still have the cartridge error light on. The last time the pc was restarted and the printer was un and replugged, it printed a calibration sheet but now 3 hours later, the cartridge error light came back on.

Your cartridge has something wrong with its electronics. There is no way to "fix" this problem. The reason you could print a calibration sheet is because the printer does not need an electrically functioning cartridge to print this test page. You need to purchase an ink cartridge that has good electronics on it. It doesn't matter if you get a refill or original manufacturer cartridge.
